Hi, my name is Dan Shaw😊
I’m the owner and curator of Curiosity African Boutique.
Since I was a child I have always loved African art. I love the stories that are told and passed down through hundreds of generations, the craftsmanship and care that goes into the work and the vibrancy of the art that separates from any other art around the world. It is unique and deep rooted.
One of my favourite things about the art, is how it connects me to the people who make it. These are some of the most amazing, brilliant and resilient people I know.
When I look at Curiosity, I don’t just see a business that sells holiday trinkets and mementos. I see a collective effort of hundreds of artisans, from South Africa and beyond its borders into Africa, that have come together to showcase the meaningful stories of colour, nature, tradition and memories.
When people come to my store, I want them to feel the same way I do, to believe that there is a world of possibility and opportunity, and it all lays right at the fingertips of an artist, a storyteller, a fellow human being who has decided to share a piece of themselves with you.
My dream is to own a warehouse one day, that focuses on empowering the youth, whilst celebrating the older generations who will pass down their knowledge of the craft. In this dream warehouse of mine, we will have rolls and rolls of materials and sewing machines, paint and clay with kilns and spinning tables. We will have leather and buckles, beads and needles. It will be one major collaborative effort, not only to make beautiful crafts, but to teach people about running their own business, taking accountability, and empowering them to pass on this mindset to future generations.
Like I said, my passion runs far deeper than just selling goods. It’s about the people and the stories. The fact that we get to take home pieces of art that encapsulate memories of our experiences, well, that’s just an added bonus 😊
