Guardians of the Wild: Rescuing a Limping Baby Rhino at Zulu Nyala

When a baby rhino was spotted limping across the reserve, the Zulu Nyala team sprang into action, mobilising a helicopter, a specialised ground crew, and renowned wildlife veterinarian Dr. Mike Toft to come to the young rhino’s aid.
Rhino mothers are fiercely protective, so the rescue required tranquillising both the calf and its mother to safely assess and treat the injury. Once sedated, Dr. Mike administered a combination of painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication, easing the calf’s discomfort. It’s moments like these that define Zulu Nyala’s unwavering commitment to wildlife welfare — where no effort is spared to ensure the animals that roam freely here are given the best possible care.
But this is not an isolated case. Life in the wild, even within a protected reserve, is filled with challenges. Rhinos sometimes clash, their powerful horns leaving behind gashes that demand medical attention.
